Noun [Proto-Slavic]

Etymology: Formed as a nomen actionis from *bьrati (“to pick up”) + *-nь, ultimately from proto-Indo-European *bʰer-. The formation is an archaism. It serves as the basis of the normal deverbative action noun *bьranьje, obtained by extending *bьranь + *-je. Not to be confused with the forms of *bornь (“battle, resistance”) > брань (branĭ, “fight, scuffle, front, wave”) spread throughout South and East Slavic in later times from Old Church Slavonic.
